Colgate freshman Lily Haluska (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) earned a Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor on Feb. 24 after leading the softball team to a 3-2 record at the Sparkle City Invite. An outfielder, Haluska hit .500 with a .722 on-base percentage and an .800 slugging percentage. She also had four RBIs and two runs.
In 10 at-bats, Haluska singled four times and hit her first career home run against USC-Upstate on Feb. 22. She also had three putouts with a perfect fielding percentage.
St. John Fisher junior Tyler Manning (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) earned two consecutive Empire 8 Conference Men’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week honors on Feb. 17 and 24.
For the week ending Feb. 16, Manning saved 18 shots in his first career start to lead the Cardinals past Haverford 9-7. For the week ending Feb. 23, he made 12 saves to lead the nationally ranked Cardinals to a 12-11 win over Ithaca.
Vermont State University Lyndon’s Gregory Gonyea (Dolgeville) recently was named the North Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Graduating a year early with a 3.93 GPA in business administration, he has already earned a handful of academic and athletic honors. On the court, he earned first-team All-Conference honors by averaging 20.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He led the league in scoring.
SUNY Cobleskill senior guard Antonia May (Amsterdam) earned first-team All-NAC honors in women’s basketball. May averages 14.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, while shooting 39.2% from the field and 82.6% from the foul line, which is second in the conference behind teammate Logan Thayne, of Hoosick Falls, at 83.8%.
SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College freshman guard Angelina Deitz (Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) earned second-team honors on the Mountain Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Team. She averaged 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
SUNY Geneseo senior Alise Hale (Niskayuna) earned the Empire 8 Conference Co-Athlete of the Week for women’s swimming on Feb. 24. She was named Swimmer of the Meet at the Empire 8 Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. She won individual titles in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, and was runner-up in the 200 individual medley. She also was part of the winning 200 and 400 medley relay teams and 400 freestyle relay team. Her times of 55.18 in the 100 butterfly and 2:01.97 in the 200 butterfly were conference records. The 200 medley and 400 medley relays also set conference records.
Utica graduate student Hunter Logan (Fort Plain) was named Empire 8 Conference Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 17. He won the shot put at the DIII Elite Meet, posting a winning throw of 16.29 meters (53 feet, 5.5 inches). He currently ranks 13th in the nation.
UMass Dartmouth senior Liam Blesi (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) earned Little East Conference Baseball Player of the Week honors on Monday. Blesi batted .500 in a season-opening doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg. He went 3 for 6 with a double and two runs scored, had a .667 slugging and on-base percentage, walked twice, was hit by a pitch and was 1 for 1 in stolen base attempts.
Suffolk sophomore guard Nick Verdile (Ballston Spa) was averaging 11.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. His .491 percentage on 3-pointers led the team and was third in Division III through Monday.
Clarkson freshman Alpine skier Colin Cotter (Broadalbin-Perth) had his two best seasonal finishes recently. His time of 2:04.20 in the giant slalom at West Mountain, in the Castleton Carnival on Feb. 2, placed him 25th of 88. His time of 1:38.88 in the slalom at Berkshire East Mountain, in the UMass Carnival on Feb. 8, placed him 27th of 77.
Buffalo State junior Natalia Sawyer (Schalmont), a three-time NCAA Division III hurdles champion, won three events and was named Women’s Most Valuable Performer of the Meet for the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Sawyer won the 60-meter hurdles (8.77), 200 (25.07) and the 400 in a meet-record time of 56.58. On Feb. 21 at the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up, she also won the 800 meters in a school-record time of 2:16.00, currently first in the SUNYAC.
SUNY Oswego senior Nathan Ratta Vine (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) placed third in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke, in 58.30, at the SUNYAC-Allegheny Mountain Conference Championship in Buffalo on Feb. 21. He also was fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.80 on Feb. 22.
Ratta Vine’s teammate, freshman diver Anthony Serrano (Amsterdam), placed sixth in the 3-meter diving with a score of 321.10.
SUNY Cortland freshman Brady Melious (Fonda-Fultonville) placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.04 meters (42 feet, 9.5 inches) at the Cornell University Marc Deneault Invitational on Feb. 22.
SUNY Cortland freshman wrestler David Ensminger (Shenendehowa) had an overall record of 16-10, including seven pins and four major decisions, at 149 pounds, through the regular season.
SUNY Plattsburgh junior guard Jaden Wilson (Johnstown) finished her women’s basketball season on Feb. 25 with a team-high 14 points in the Cardinals’ 61-58 loss to SUNY Canton in the SUNYAC quarterfinals.
