Joann Johnston Rautenberg Davidson, NC - Joann Johnston Rautenberg, 94, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, in her residence at The Pines of Davidson, where she lived for the last 21 years.
Joann Jordan Johnston was born in Mooresville, NC on May 7, 1930. She graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1952 and in 1954 married Theodore H. Rautenberg III, then of Schenectady, NY. The couple resided in Alplaus until 2004, when they retired to The Pines. T.H. Rautenberg (1930-2015) was a research physicist at General Electric and played French horn in the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra all those years.
Joann Rautenberg was staff pianist for the Schenectady Symphony, the Schenectady Light Opera Company, the College of Saint Rose and Capital Artists Opera Company. She studied with pianist and composer Joseph Fennimore and played many of his works in recital. As a collaborative pianist, she was sought-after by many vocalists and instrumentalists. Soon after moving to the Pines, she founded the Pine Tones chorus, which she accompanied until 2023.
Joann is survived by her beloved sister, Natalie Johnston Matheson, brother-in-law John Rautenberg, sisters-in-law Carla Rautenberg and Sarah Holden, four nieces, three nephews, many great-nieces and -nephews, and a legion of friends.
Family and friends will celebrate her life on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at The Pines of Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane, Davidson, NC 28036. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson, or the Residents' Support Fund at The Pines, c/o Motria Procyk.
