Amsterdam trucking company hit by fire Sunday night (w/ photos)

Responding crews encountered a “significant” fire inside the building after the blaze was reported around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Flames engulfed several tractor-trailers at the scene of the trucking, tire service, wood pellet and warehousing business at 1 Front St.

In addition to cold temperatures and wind, Agresta said firefighters had challenges establishing a water supply early on in the fire due to the location of the building between Route 5 and the CSX railroad tracks.

Propane tanks inside the building that “let loose” during the blaze account for explosions described as coming from the scene by some locals on social media, Agresta said.

The fire was brought under control around 2 a.m.

Firefighters remained on the scene throughout the early morning and continued into the afternoon on Monday.

The fire was contained to the western portion of the long rectangular building that stretches down Front Street. The structure is believed to be salvageable.

“That’s why the building’s not a total loss, because we were able to put it out without affecting the entire building,” Agresta said.

Investigators with the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control were at the scene on Monday probing the cause and origin of the fire.

Amsterdam firefighters remained on scene assisting with the investigation and putting out hotspots throughout Monday.

“Hopefully, they’re done sometime today,” Agresta said.

It’s unclear when the results of the investigation will be determined and released.
