Mary E. Bilka Niskayuna - Mary E. Bilka, 66, of Niskayuna, New York passed away peacefully after a brief illness on February 25, 2025. Born on February 7, 1959, in Schenectady, New York, Mary's life was a tapestry of motherhood, creativity and unwavering kindness that touched all who knew her.
Mary was the daughter of the late Robert and Barbara (Baker) Nagle. In 1977, she graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School and immediately entered the workforce. Her work ethic was evident from the start and she climbed the career ladder in the power technology industry. Starting at General Electric, Mary honed her skills and became known for her proficiency with computers. Her dedication and talent culminated in her role as a senior analyst at New York ISO, where she was instrumental in grid planning and electricity markets until her retirement in 2024.
The true cornerstone of Mary's life was her family. She was the loving wife of Michael Bilka, whom she married in 1990. Together, they raised Adam R. (Kaylee) Palmer and Shannon M. Palmer, their greatest adventure of all. Mary's love extended to her adored grandchildren, Isabella and Allison Palmer, who will forever cherish the warmth and care of their Grammy.
Mary's creative spirit shone brightly in her hobbies and interests. She was a gifted crafter, with a particular talent for crocheting soft baby blankets that became treasured gifts. Her artistic flair was matched by her meticulous writing. Music played a significant role in Mary's life, especially in her relationship with her husband, Mike. Their shared love for concerts led to unforgettable experiences, including front-row seats at the Red Rock Amphitheater in Colorado.
Family vacations were a source of joy for Mary, with Cape Cod and Old Orchard Beach in Maine providing the backdrop for treasured memories. In her moments of relaxation, she indulged in forensic and law TV shows and revisited the beloved antics of her favorite series, Friends. Mary's kind heart and loving presence made every moment special for those around her.
Survived by her loving husband, Michael Bilka; beloved children, Adam R. (Kaylee) Palmer, Shannon M. Palmer; cherished grandchildren, Isabella and Allison Palmer; brother, Daniel (Christine) Nagle and sister, Kathleen Squires; as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, as well as her brother, Joseph Nagle.
The family wishes to thank the ER team at Ellis, and the ICU unit at Westchester Medical for their care.
Calling hours will be held at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. on Wednesday, March 12th from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 6 p.m.
