JOHNSTOWN — After wrapping up a group show celebrating 25 years of SUNY Fulton-Montgomery's Perrella Gallery arts events on Nov. 4, the latest exhibit at the gallery opened Nov. 18.
The exhibit features the works of William P. Wiatr, an Adirondack artist.
"As a regional artist whose works are intrinsically inspired by the Adirondacks, showing those quiet moments that so often happen without witness, William's work represents the core goal of the Perrella Gallery of presenting regional artists to both the FMCC campus and the community at large," said gallery director Brian May.
The show is entitled "William P. Wiatr: The Adirondack Artist," and features a large number of painted scenes from the vast Adirondack Park.
Wiatr’s gallery is currently located in the foothills of the Adirondacks in Poland, where he resides with his wife Chris. The work in Wiatr’s gallery reflects his interactions with the natural world around him and he paints a variety of Adirondack mountain scenes, lakes, and wildlife.
With a rustic aesthetic that matches the subject matter of his paintings, he creates custom frames for all of his work.
Wiatr was introduced to painting at an early age by his grandmother and has no formal training. He started painting in 1976, with thousands of his paintings and prints on display all over the world. Many local residents may recognize his work from the Northville Rotary’s annual Woodworking and Fine Arts weekend held in July each year. Wiatr attends the Fine Arts weekend each year where he displays and sells prints of his original paintings.
"The Wiatr exhibit has been very well received and commented on by various visitors. We have been very happy with how well it has been received and it certainly has met our expectations," May said.
The exhibit will run through Feb. 21. A free closing reception will take place on that date from 5 to 7 p.m. The community and light refreshments will be served.
The Perrella Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the semester, or by appointment. It is closed weekends and holidays. For further information, contact the May at perrella.gallery@fmcc.edu.
