FONDA-FULTONVILLE - Someday soon, Ty Sanges’ name will be the one in the byline of stories just like this.
Sanges, a senior at Fonda-Fultonville High School, really likes to run. He participates in cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track and field in the spring.
He will continue his running career in the fall at Springfield College, where he will also begin his studies in sports journalism.
“Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve always been drawn to sports, waking up watching SportsCenter on ESPN,” Sanges said. “I’ve always been interested in articles, writing and letting my creativity shine. Combining my passions for sports and creativity, through either writing or making my own media, I felt like it was the perfect fit for a career to pursue.”
While Sanges knew that Springfield’s academic programs were the perfect fit for what he wanted to do, he still wanted to see if running cross country and track at the next level would be an option.
“The sports journalism and communications major at Springfield College fit perfectly for me,” he said, “but after getting in contact with the cross country coach, I realized that running in college was something that I could do.”
Sanges concluded his time on the Fonda-Fultonville track and field team on June 8, when his 4x800 relay team competed in the state championships in Syracuse.
Along with Exavier Garcia, Joseph Susi and Brady Melious, the group finished with a time of 8:16.20, good for seventh place in the state for Division II.

“As a middle schooler, I was in gym class doing the pacer test, and I realized that I can actually run for a good amount of distance, and that led to trying out cross country, to see how I would do,” Sanges said of how he initially got into running. “I had a successful modified cross country season, and then a successful modified track season, and it just grew from there into a big passion of mine.”
In addition to running, Sanges has been involved in band and chorus during his time at Fonda-Fultonville, where he took on a leadership role in class.
Something that stood out to Sanges, a similarity between sports and music, is the support from the community.
“The Fonda-Fultonville community is amazing in how they support us, either for sports or musical events for either band or chorus,” Sanges said.
“The running community is amazing too,” he added. “I’ve made so many friends from other schools and even just going to visit Springfield, I’ve met so many people on their cross country and track teams.
“Not only the athletes, but the parents are so positive, supportive and encouraging. The running community is part of the reason I love running so much because it’s such an amazing group of people. They’re always there for you, cheering you on.”
In addition to running and music, Sanges was voted the president for the Class of 2024 for both of his sophomore and junior years, before taking on the role of vice president as a senior.
He has also been known to volunteer within his community, assisting elderly residents with outdoor work that needed to be done.
“I love being a leader, and trying to get everyone that I can incorporated into things, being someone that other people took towards to guide them,” Sanges said. “I just thought that in order to become the best version of myself, I should be involved as much as I could.
“I feel like all the clubs I’m in represent who I try to be, as a whole.”
